Wow... Not sure if it's even near that reserve yet!

Ah, the SD1. A car where even on the really, really good examples, the panels still don't line up:

I thought that the second I saw the under-bonnet view. If I bought it I'd definitely replace it with standard black smooth boost pipes, or maybe chrome piping would be nice.

Looks a mess though...

Hey, if the panels never fit properly in the first place you don't need to worry about lining them up again once you repair them :)

It's thoughtful ;)

I'd prefer a Turbo P6, but there yu go.

Same applies to a Series. If the panels line up, it's been done frame-up. By a madman.

Despite the horror of being an English car from its period, and with that setup, it's still probably more reliable than the Olds Turbo Jetfire 215...

Hey, if the panels never fit properly in the first place you don't need to worry about lining them up over and over again once each time you repair them :)

It's thoughtful ;)

FTFY :)

HOLY MOTHER OF WANT. For the sake of my own sanity (and bank balance), it's a very good think that I don't live in the UK right now.

I really really want it. 5-speed manual car as well...

Jeez. I've got to look up this turbo jetfire. I've heard the name but never done any research.

To out-unreliable a late BL car that must be impressive...

I sway back and forth between wanting an SD1 or a P6. To be honest, I think if the option was there in front of me I'd have to flip a coin...

The car in general, only issues with early 60s GM build quality - not perfect, but hardly insurmountable. The trouble comes from having an earlier relative version of the Buick/Rover 215 aluminum V8 with this nonsense attached:

Kinja'd!!!

Due to the turbo being so primitive, it had to constantly inject water/methanol mix with a dash of oil (IIRC). The aluminum V8, + some liner/etc. issues and cracked blocks, with head gasket fragility, combined with a temperamental turbo that had to be kept topped up, and was prone to cracking its fluid reservoir, combined with a left/right temperature imbalance and metallurgy issues with coolant...

Ouch, that does sound like a nightmare. Not an easily fixable one either like most of the BL problems :S

Bloody ambitious though, I'll give them that...

Turbocharged low/mid displacement aluminum V8 in 1961 - impressive, really, if it had worked. It was bad enough that I think GM offered an engine swap to all customers, so between that and the comic attrition, there are almost none left.

Oh yes, and I neglected one of the possibilities of failure: pressurized injection fluid going down the intake and hydro-locking the engine. Exciting!

-Possibly related note, the missing library copy of the Des Hammill book finally showed up. Only 5+ months too late to return - screw it. I paid the lost fees then, it's mine now.

Had some other unrelated items put on top, then traveled with them to another semi-storage sort of location in the house that was one of the few I didn't comb through item by item, because there was no sane reason it should've gone there, and it was in disguise. Which, delay in processing those items later... Serious screwing-over by family member being "tidy", in short - just as I'd suspected but in slightly different form. Would you like one? :3

Ooh yeah that'd be cool :) I'm stony-broke at the moment, but how much would you want for it?

Oh, I've still got those rocker covers and cortina tail-lights here. I could offset the price of shipping them if that works...

I'm still thinking about a jaunt to Blighty in May or so. Putting me up (or putting up with me) for a day or two would probably be offset enough. I'll keep you up to date.

How many cars made outside West Germany had perfectly aligned panels in the '70s?

Well, talking of wide gaps, there's a wide gap between 'perfectly aligned panels' and 70s Rover standards.
